Para formar o past continuous utilizamos o Simple Past do verbo To Be + o ING form do verbo principal.
No caso do exemplo acima temos o verbo To Be no Simple Past

I Was
You Were
He/ She / It  Was
We / You / They  Were

Seguido do verbo principal com o ING FORM, ou seja, verbo principal --> To Put ( PutTING).

O Past Continuous é usado para indicar uma atividade ou situação que estava se desenvolvendo no momento em que uma outra ação a interrompeu. A oração que expressa essa interrupção tem o verbo no Simple Past. As seguintes conjunções são normalmente usadas para ligar essas duas orações: as, just as, when, while.

Usa-se o Past Continuous nas duas orações quando as atividades ou situações estavam se desenvolvendo ao mesmo tempo.

Vamos dificultar um pouco mais.

SIMPLE PAST PERFECT

O past perfect é usado para expressar uma ação que ocorreu no passado antes de uma outra ação ter ocorrido. Esse tempo verbal é marcado pela forma:

Sujeito + had + verbo principal no particípio passado + complemento 

The movie had already started when I got home yesterday. 

(O filme já tinha começado quando eu cheguei em casa ontem).

Leia as orações abaixo:

We had seen two strange men near the bank before we called the police last night.

We heard a bomb explosion after we had made the phone call

When the policemen arrived, the robbers had taken all the money from the safe.

O Simple Past Perfect é formado por HAD + PAST PARTICIPLE do verbo principal. Quando se trata de dois acontecimentos passados, usa-se o PAST PERFECT para indicar que aquele que ocorreu ANTES, enquanto o outro é colocado (OU SUBENTENDIDO) no Simple Past. As conjunções after, before, when, são normalmente usadas para unir essas orações.

As formas abreviadas didn´t, wasn´t, weren´t, ´d, hadn´t são usadas em linguagem informal.

Agora vamos ler um pequeno texto para iniciarmo a nossa terceira lição.

She really didn´t mean that

 A young wife had just seen her husband off to work and went upstairs to take a bath. As she was putting her foot in the water, she remembered that the gas stove was still burning in the kitchen. There was no one else in the house, so, without putting on her bathrobe, she went down to turn the gas off.

As she was doing so, she heard footsteps coming to the back door. She thought that it was the milkman. He used to bring the milk bottles right into the kitchen. So she dashed for the nearest door, which was the cupboard where they kept brooms and things. Just in time.

The back door opened and the footsteps came into the kitchen. But then to her horror the cupboard door was flung open. It was the gas man who had come to read the meter. It was difficult to think what to say. What she said was: I´m sorry. I was expecting the milkman.

Os verbos regulares têm a terminação -ED no simple past. Os irregulares apresentam formas variadas. No Simple Past a forma do verbo é a mesma para TODAS as pessoas. O Simple Past é usado para expressar ações completas no passado. Advérbios ou locuções adverbiais comumente usados para indicar tempo passa

Regular Verbs

Remember + ed = Remembered à  Regra geral --> Infinitivo sem a particula to + ED.

Die + ed = Died à Verbos terminados em e à Perdem o e final e acrescenta o ED.

Reply  + ed = Replied à Para verbos terminados em y precedido de consoante, muda-se o y para i e acrescenta-se ED.

Play + ed = Played à Verbos terminados em y precedido de vogal à Seguem a regra geral.

Stop à Verbo terminado em (CVC) + ed = Stopped

Prefer à Verbo oxítono terminado em (CVC)  + ed = Preferred  à  Para verbos de uma sílaba ou verbos oxítonos de duas ou mais sílabas, terminados em uma consoante precedida de apenas uma vogal (CVC), dobra-se a consoante final.
